Government Funding

Our Sports Premium and Pupil Premium Strategy for 2022-23:

Sports Premium:

Schools must spend additional funding each year, on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do so.

Pupil Premium:

Sandal Castle Primary School recognises that all pupils, regardless of their background, should have equal access to a curriculum which will enable them to reach their potential. The pupil premium is a government initiative that targets extra money to pupils from deprived backgrounds, whose research shows underachievement compared to their peers.   The Government have used pupils entitled to Free School meals as an indicator of deprivation, and have deployed a fixed amount of money to schools per pupil, based on the number of pupils eligible for Free School meals.  Children in care, or the children of armed service personnel are also eligible for this increased funding.

The Government are not dictating how schools should spend this money, but are clear that schools will need to employ the strategies that they know will support these pupils to increase their attainment, and ‘narrow the gap’ between their attainment and the attainment of other pupils. Our Governing Body oversees the use of this money to ensure good value and impact.  Typically, we spend the greatest amount of this money on human resources, as we believe that this makes the biggest difference to the quality of our children’s progress and achievement. We also promote school visits and experiences to widen our children’s life experiences and behaviour rewards, as these are extrinsic motivators.
