Our Science Curriculum
Where we investigate and experiment
At Sandal Castle Primary School, we promote a science curriculum that has curiosity at its heart, is equally accessible to all, develops scientific thinking, aims to inspire children to see themselves as scientists and recognise their role as innovators in our local and global community.
Core Principles of Science
We know science is going well when...
· It challenges our thinking so we are encouraged to wonder, ask questions and test our ideas.
· Everyone works together to develop their understanding in a practical, collaborative and meaningful way.
· It enables us to develop our skills as scientists and make connections in real life contexts in order to impact on the world around us.
Year 6 - Adaptation and Evolution
Year 6 have been learning about how living things have adapted and evolved over time. They investigated Darwin's theory of natural selection in finches by using a variety of tools (different beak types) to 'eat' different sizes of seeds. When the smaller seeds ran out, the finches with the bigger beaks were the ones who were able to survive.
British Science Week 2025
For British Science Week this year, every class in school from Year 1 to Year 6 took part in an investigation to see how far they could shoot their rocket mice. Each year group then recorded their results in different ways so we could see how this skill progressed throughout school. We also had lots of fun experimenting with which variables would affect how far our rocket mouse travelled. Here are some photos.
