Our DT Curriculum
Where we plan, design, create and evaluate
Design and technology is a creative, technical and practical subject. At Sandal Castle Primary School, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. They acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. Children are given opportunities to reflect upon and evaluate past and present design technology, its uses and effectiveness. Concentrating on local and global themes from EYFS to Year 6, we aim to provide children with an exciting, relevant and challenging curriculum with a variety of enrichment opportunities. The knowledge and skills-based curriculum offered encourages them to become innovators and risk-takers.
Food is a key area of DT. Each child will experience a food activity each year, building on Important skills. They will also study food, annually, as part of a topic, ensuring cross curricular links and progression. Each key stage studies textiles at least once, so skills are revisited and developed. Every year group focuses on at least one design project incorporating design, making and evaluating.
